Navigating Transportation in Italy: Trains, Buses, and Subways!

This weekend, five other girls and I decided to take a trip to Milan on Friday night and then to Verona on Saturday. We started off our day by taking a public bus to the Bassano Del Grappa train station, to head on our way earlier than the free shuttle CIMBA provides. We felt well prepared for most of the travel with buses and trains since we had a travel plan orientation earlier that week, so we could have some idea of how to navigate everything.
As we conquered the bus to the train station and eventually got on our train, we realized our flaw when it came to our next connection in Verona, on our way to Milan. Our train got delayed, so during our connection, we had two minutes to get from platform ten to platform one. As we got to Verona, we started sprinting down the underground tunnel to platform one. By a miracle, we made it and successfully got to Milan on time!
That was not the end of the adventures we had trying to figure out public transportation. When we were in Milan, we decided to use the subway to head over to the Duomo. Since all of us were from the Midwest, none of us really knew how to use the subway system. I am proud to say we figured it out with ease, and suggest using the subway in Milan, way cheaper than taxis! It led us right to the city center, where we enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and endless shopping with all you could ever think of wanting.
After spending a nice day in Milan and another beautiful day in Verona, seeing all the landmarks. Such as the Romeo and Juliet balcony, the river surrounding the city, and endless delicious food, we sadly had to realize our trip was coming to a close. Once we headed over to the train station and found a place to hide away from the heat 85 degree heat, we realized our train tickets did not have a platform number. This is when we realized our horrible mistake, we bought bus tickets instead of train tickets for part of our trip.

After the bus, with a new friend made and many stories to tell about our mistakes. One thing we learned for sure was to always check your tickets. At the end of the day, spending that extra five euros for comfort is worth it.
Even with the challenges that travel weekends might face, it brings unforgettable memories and great stories to tell for a long time. There is nothing more rewarding than coming back to campus and taking a second to reflect on everything you accomplished, all the troubles, fun, and excitement that a travel weekend and everyday life at CIMBA will bring.
