CIMBA believes in a total learning environment, not just classroom education. The staff at both The University of Iowa and in Italy work to make sure the student experience is well rounded and supported at many levels. Below are some activities students can expect during the summer program.
Orientation Travel Orientation Company Tours and Guest Speakers Recreational Activities Field Trips Cultural Classes and Excursions
Orientation Orientation begins the first day students arrive on campus. The initial meeting focuses on campus issues, and students are introduced to the CIMBA staff and professors. They also receive an introduction to the living environment including meal times, housing, health care and other issues related to the campus. In subsequent meetings, orientation covers topics such as safety, immigration, academic practices and policies including the mandatory attendance policy. Orientation contains valuable and necessary information and, therefore, is mandatory for all students. back to the top
Travel Orientation Prior to the first travel weekend, the CIMBA staff will meet with the students and discuss travel tips. They will cover topics including budgeting wisely, using European trains, reading train and bus schedules, places to visit, safety and avoiding petty theft. The staff also will discuss what to do in the case of an emergency. This orientation also is mandatory. back to the top
Company Tours & Guest Speakers During the summer, some students will be required to participate in company tours. Company tour participation varies from class to class. Students who participate will visit leading Veneto businesses in a variety of fields such as food production, information technology, fashion, manufacturing, communications and sales. The tours provide students with exposure to real-world operations and allow the professors to incorporate information learned into the classroom setting. Students also will learn and understand more about the importance of the Veneto region in relation to Italy and Western Europe. There also will be periodic guest speakers who visit campus to talk with students and lecture on relevant topics. back to the top
Recreational Activities Students who enjoy outdoor recreation can opt to take a day trip to the beach in Jesolo or take a bus up Mount Grappa for hiking and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. More information on area recreation if found in the surrounding area section of the Web site. back to the top
Field Trips Throughout the program, there will be organized field trips to various locations that have a cultural or historical focus. Students can participate in these trips on the afternoons that they do not have class. The trips provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the Veneto region and northern Italy. The excursions usually are to smaller towns and unique destinations that would not be found in most major guide books, allowing students to explore areas they would not normally get to visit on their own. The trips vary, but in the past students have traveled to nearby towns like Bassano and Castelfranco to do some shopping or visited Verona to see where the famous play Romeo and Juliet supposedly took place. back to the top
Cultural Classes & Excursions In addition to the traditional academic courses that students will be taking, they also will have the opportunity for lessons outside the classroom. Special trips to local wineries, wine appreciation classes and excursions to gourmet Italian restaurants help to expose the students to the finest aspects of Italian culture. The authentic Italian dinner outing is by far the most popular extra-curricular event for students. Students, professors and staff dine at a restaurant where students enjoy a traditional Italian meal while learning about the food and the culture associated with meals in Italy. back to the top |
