European Travel

Printable Page
There are a lot of considerations when planning your trip. Below are some things that you should consider. No matter how much planning you do, the travel will still be an adventure.

Visas
Students should be conscious of visa requirements for all countries they plan to visit. Most students will not need an additional travel visa to enter a new country, especially other E.U.-member countries. Non-U.S. citizens should investigate their requirements. Visa requirements can be found on each country’s consular Web site.

International Student Identity Card
The ISIC card verifies a student’s status and is recognized throughout the world. Cardholders are eligible for discounts ranging from lower airfares and cheaper insurance coverage, to reduced or free admission to museums, theaters, concerts and cultural sites. The card is issued by the Council on International Educational Exchange. It also is available at all STA offices and is sold at many U.S. colleges and universities. For more information visit the International Student Travel Confederation.

STA Travel is one of the world’s largest student travel organizations, providing discounted student flights, hotel and hostel reservations, rail passes, travel gear and more. STA has been a great source for low student airfare prices in the past. However, travelers must have an ISIC card to be eligible for the student rates.

Another source of budget travel information is Rick Steve’s Web site. Rick Steve has vast experience traveling in Europe and provides some great information on travel guides, rail passes and unique traveling ideas. Student Universe also has good travel information, and you can also book flights, purchase rail passes and reserve rooms on their Web site.

Travel Books
A reliable travel book is an important tool for students. They can be bulky and heavy, so choose wisely. For example, if interested in historical information, purchase a book that focuses on history. If planning to visit specific cities or countries, it may be helpful to purchase smaller books that include detailed city maps. Some books are also more budget oriented than others, so check out the price ranges they show for accommodations and the number of listings for each range. To lessen the weight of luggage, rip out or photocopy specific chapters or information that will be needed instead of taking the whole book.
